                      SAFE Research Study

Background

The flu virus evolves from year to year and can be different in different locations.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has requested that researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison conduct a study to help increase our understanding of the flu virus and people’s immunity to it across the United States.

If you are interested in participating please fill out the enrollment form on this page.

About the SAFE Study

The SAFE Study is an influenza monitoring and prevention study.

The goal of this research is to collect blood samples from participants across the country to better understand how the influenza (flu) virus changes across time and to develop vaccinations that do a better job of covering influenza virus strains from year to year.

What will participation involve?

Participants will complete either:

  1. A one-time blood draw and survey
  2. Enroll into a multi-year study with 2 blood draws per year for 3 years.
    • Each blood draw will happen pre-flu season (Sept-Nov) and post-flu season (Apr-Jun).

Who is eligible to participate?

Anyone who:

  • Has maintained a primary residence for the past 6 months,
  • Is not currently hospitalized
  • Does not have an immunocompromising condition
  • Not enrolled into a flu clinical trial or immunocompromising clinical trial

Participants of all ages are welcome to join

Will I be compensated for participating?

Yes, participants will receive $25 for the first blood draw.

If you agree to participate in the multi-year study, you will receive $35 for year 2, and $45 for year 3.

Compensation may be up to $210 for full participation.
